Exercise vs. Diet: A Scientific Insight

A recent study from Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise, and Health Science reveals a more effective approach to weight loss: running over dieting. This scientific research highlights a stark contrast in weight loss strategies and their outcomes.

The Study’s Findings: Binge Eating vs. Normal Appetite

The study observed two groups of men: one that reduced calorie intake and another that burned calories through running. The dieters were found to often binge eat, compensating for the calories they missed. Conversely, the runners maintained their regular appetite post-exercise. This difference in eating behaviour is attributed to two hormones: ghrelin, which triggers hunger, and peptide YY, which induces feelings of fullness.

Hormonal Responses: Understanding Appetite Control

Ghrelin and peptide YY play significant roles in appetite control. Dieters experienced heightened ghrelin levels, leading to increased hunger and subsequent binge eating. Runners, on the other hand, didn’t show a similar compensatory response in appetite, even after intense training sessions.
